A New Year’s Toast Jan. 1, 2021

Gary Hunter

why don’t crows sue

or daffodils shun beauty contests

or oceans kick out whales

to welcome elephants?

why harvest togetherness from

seed sown in a rough wind?

why burn the free fuel of laughter

and let our axe blades rust?

why use smiles to tie opinions to posts

why keep our vicious pets inside?

everyone saddle up to the bar

this party begins with a toast

and let it freely flow

this wine of why we are here
