Kamikaze - Sept. 3, 2023

Gary Hunter

the most dangerous occurrence

in the back of my house

are the hummingbird chases

pedal-to-the-metal pursuits

without the squealing tires

and engine roar the burning rubber

the oil-soaked banked turns

or the crowd cheering as they

accelerate to the finish line

they have zoomed so close

to the hood of my nose

just missed both ears

and I’ve had to duck when

they’ve kamikazed straight at me

after the chaser

banishes the interloper

he take a victory lap

not just with a bouquet of flowers

but a whole backyard of them
