we don’t require eye-burning sunsets

or spilled-paint sunrises

 

never need to watch a dog spin

or a hummingbird build a nest

 

we could live just fine without rainbows

eclipses and falling stars

 

none are necessities for survival

 

and yet  what would life be like

if only tasks lay ahead

 

if nothing turned our head

and touched us deeply

 

or if a few chosen words

never melted into a key

 

that unlocked a door

we didn’t know was there
