part of the year

she’s the scalding sandbox

in a brown wasteland

by late fall  the mountains

exhale their cool breath

that rushes over her

she’s feared for holding a

branding iron to your August

face then moving closer

and loved when her December sun

warms cold fingers and throws

something sweet in your coffee

the desert is a difficult relationship

few embrace  you must catch

her in the right mood to get close

like when she’s daydreaming

of happy faces during

a warm sunny winter

or feeling their surprised looks

of an early wet spring

smothered in green
