A Gloomy Poem - Jan. 8, 2023

a day to never return

descends in gray water

the night will drown


written in black ink

because that’s how it will end

without fanfare or encore


for it never struggles

never swims and tomorrow

again will float till it sinks


the moment of death

unseen unmourned

surrendered silence


and with a click I see

the dogs are already in their

evening spots on the sofa


as the yellow lamplight

spreads to the back sliders

and the ebony wall of night


and somewhere beyond that

that gulp in the darkness
