Be Careful with Sad Poems - Jan. 28, 2023

they tell me

you shouldn’t write a sad poem

while you’re still drowning in sorrow


that it will be too dark

too inescapable and sink

everyone who hears it


that your words will inundate

those that read it and

take them under with you


that what you need is some

separation and perspective

something to hold you above it


a life preserver


which will keep you afloat

improve the chance of seeing land

and finding the current of a poem

to take you there
