in the past new leaders would stand over

the dripping pincushion of an old man

as they gloat under an ill-fitting crown

now we simply vote, put a dot next to a name

slip the paper into an envelope or box

and cross our fingers under the bedcovers

sometimes we might awaken and remember

the recent twist of our political history

the peaceful transfer of power

flesh-ripping instruments are now banned

no sticks or stones either though we’re still

allowed to keep daggers in our eyes

throw them anytime we want

and imagine they hit the mark

it makes anyone feel good

so you can go on with your day

proud of the marksmanship

in a nice blue suit purple plaid tie

knotted to perfection as you push

a heavy glass that opens into

the lobby of an office building

that scans for weapons

as you brace for a different battle

for the next nine hours
