tomato seeds have sprouted

into very thin babies,

arms spread wide,

wanting, reaching, needing

 

we’ll see how good

of a mother-father I am

over the next few months,

 

measurable by how much

purple-red juice

drips off the knife

 

and how many times

the eyes glaze over
