Horsing Around - July 4, 2022

I trick life

to gallop round the ring

put a rope on her

and walk her back

to the stables

pretend it’s a

doctor’s exam

something was missed

in the last one

requiring a closer look

if I’m gentle enough

she’ll lie down

close her eyes

and give me enough time

to collect a small biopsy

then she will rise

perhaps feisty

and sprint for the fields

and I’ll have

my piece of her

a raw poem

to experiment with

stretch and cut

beat twist and fold

and lay on a barn hook to dry

in the bright sun

for the tasteful scrutiny

of other passing horse lovers
