Letter to my Brother - Feb. 8, 2023

when was the last time you penned one?

sat down to a blank page

pen pinched between fingers

and stared out the window

to search inside yourself

for what to say?

remember the stop and go beginning?

like a baby bird on the edge

of the nest Working the wings

flexing the sinewy facts

taking breaths of feeling

head-bobbing for an angle

the honest point of view

then letting it fly

the launch the here-goes-nothing

sweep of the pen a final fold of

feathers then it’s airborne

no going back

I wrote my brother a letter

I think he’s still going over

the gist was gratitude

but the revealing line was

I love you now more

than I ever thought I would
