My Little Heroes - May 24, 2026

I’ve been practicing

the sobriety march,

one foot in front of the other,

the police test for inebriation

and a great drill for old teetotalers

if I lean too far to one side

I notice thin bands of muscle

between the hips and ankles,

contract, then let go,

rescuing me back to vertical

I figure with practice

these little muscular strands

will strengthen and support me

during a real-life tipping moment

perhaps even become little heroes

it’s been a couple of months

of practice and like a drunk,

I still often fail the test

and stumble sideways

anyone watching wouldn’t know

they’re sidewalk rehearsals,

and look for my car

or the cop and his car

but seeing neither might presume,

this is a guy to take the wide way around
