Oh Bernard (on his 97th birthday) Sept. 16, 2022

I could write (and you might like)

an extended dedication poem

some huge spreadsheet

of your marvels and talents

which would require

multiple drafts

tons of editing

long-winded critiques

perhaps many many nights

bent over lamp light

and early mornings

waiting for more light

heck I may even

run out of time

so I’m thinking

it ought to be easier

why should I or anyone

labor over a love poem?

why can’t it be as

effortless as a

waterfall

tumbling

into a pool

with lyrics

like floating leaves

spilling over the edge?

upstream

every heart drops them

once in awhile

and mine

is just starting to shed

thinking of you
