a shadow is a shade orphan, born

outside the larger sun-blocked clan,

the child of a single parent

some travel and see a big world

the sedentary ones have neighbors

they meet at certain times every day

to greet with casual gossip

so no, they are not isolated

though on cloudy days they

are allowed to visit their large

extended family

and some must wonder

what it would be like

not sleeping alone
