on a bright night

he must peek

through the lit branch

the mice easily see

and glide through many shadows

before a final turn

stretches talons into the light


the mouse’s chance

the hole-bound body turn

and tail whip that

becomes the snake

racing against

those needled claws

and angry beak


the winner

either one

will no doubt

have some punctuated words

for the moon
