sometimes a piece of music

I was listening to

plays in my head while I write

if a love ballad I’ll choose words

similar to those in the song

and add my own melodic riffs

to expand the story

recently a baby I was holding

put its head on my chest

so I hummed “Higher Love”

by Stevie Winwood

the perfect setup for a fresh poem

as new lyrics popped out of

my heart and into my head

damned if I remembered any of it

I fell asleep too
