did the Unabomber send them

in simple birthday

or fancy holiday wrap

plain new brown boxes

or used UPS ones

then again  who isn’t utterly

curious about any package arriving

with their name on the doorstep

and with no return address

if it’s something they’ve won

a contest they’d forgotten they’d entered

maybe some gift from a mysterious stranger

or more shadowy - a special delivery of karma

yes don’t we all think they should deliver

more rebounded goodnesses  credit for

fine deeds and kindnesses

and with that hope they took

a knife to the length of

someone’s generosity and

noticed it was surprisingly heavy

then came that strange yet

indelible sense of truth that dawned

as they pulled back the flaps

this is a big mistake
