our dogs are like children

we live and sleep with them

hug and hold them

mix excitement into their bowls

to delight them

 

let them snack the same time

we get the urge

and play with them

when they get that feral itch

 

a backyard dog will still love you

on a kibble-and-water diet

but treat them like

your own flesh and blood

 

and they will brighten your heart

the way the moon would light

the world at night

 

if it decided to move

a little closer
