light stabs the darkness

my eyes spring open

 

I catch a toe on the underwear

then zip and button

my favorite shorts

 

t-shirt in hand, I fly two-steps-

at-a-time down the stairs

 

stop with a skid on the kitchen linoleum

grabbing milk, bowl and corn flakes

 

the spoon clangs on my teeth

in a rapid-shovel breakfast

the milk splashes down my throat

 

I escape out the front door

like an unchained dog

trained enough to close it

 

before I turn and run

chasing the day’s dreams

that already have a big head start
