ecstatic grads  raised diplomas

hats airborne on the second

 

I wonder about today’s youth

 

if they see the barbed wire out there

the divided camps of belief

the factions of thought

the torn curtains from a

country’s battles at windows

the extreme temperature of opinion

the bloodless wounds that slowly bleed

 

or maybe they do know how awful

and bitter it is and believe their innocent

dreams will make things better

 

perhaps it was inevitable that one day

someone decided to add sugar to bitter

rhubarb and make a pie

 

as unique as a nation

working out its differences
