my 1970 high school soccer team photo

lean bodies perky faces hopeful smiles


like newly planted a vibrancy

caged for the spindly race skyward


then a summer of plenty fat with green

and red fruit as limbs grow into the world


a recent reunion photo all of us

way past our producing days


some need bracing to stand

many bend towards the earth


winter is around the corner

most hope for a long fall

with a few warm days


others I can tell

seem ready for it


the first killing frost
