your mouth waters for

but in the moment

the cashier’s hand and yours

intersect on the bag above the counter

do you ever taste the human flavor

salted by their eyes

wrapped in a double worded thank you

delivered with the flicker of an extra spicy smile?

a condiment thrown in

you never asked for
