a tree’s leaf takes your breath

blows out oxygen

for your next gulp of air

 

perfect cooperation

 

yet once when I was young

I’d climbed high into one

 

the tree quivered

and held its breath,

a branch broke

 

and as I fell,

I forgot about

our relationship
