Thanksgiving Shows Up - Nov. 23, 2023

Gary Hunter

we get old

one broken bolt

and worn hinge at a time

never noticed until we see

the roof sag or find a door that won’t close

one pipe that continually leaks

or windows so dirty we can’t see out

everyone strains to be presentable

but maintenance gets deferred

many parts aren’t replaceable

and we fall into disrepair

like that shack down the street

that leans badly needing

much more than a paint job

we never could imagine we’d become

that rundown house a teardown

just occupying space

waiting for that developer - Time

to demolish and replace us

with something brand new

and in the grand architecture

of so many hopes and dreams

to come

Thanksgiving shows up
