The Cost of Not Listening - Feb. 4, 2025

life is like trusting the horse

to bring us safely home

while crossing a stony field

and ignoring the warning

that floats back and forth

across our awareness and

warns us of something sinister

in this case a new gopher hole

I believe that someone

in a back room of our brain

sends texts and emails

flashes the power on and off

sounds an alarm   blinks an S O S

does whatever it can to

get us to pull on the reins

I know I’ll think of this while

recuperating from my latest blunder

chastise my horse-mind

for ignoring the signs

and have plenty of time

to replay the cost

of not listening
