approaching a large, shaded stone,

I see a brown lizard lies unfazed,

unmoving, eyes sealed

I prod the belly, stroke the head

thinking for sure it’s dead and as I

lift the tail, it leaps and bolts away

besides a Jesus! and What the f _ _ _ !

I had no idea that viewing reanimation

could make a heart beat so loud

tha thump  tha thump  tha thump

so noisy and excited that it leaps

into the throat and throttles

the oxygen supply

when I eventually capture an

easy breath, I’ll make sure

to add lizards to that saying

about sleeping dogs
