some stories that circled the table

still lay in my mind like

the untouched hors d’oeuvres

Myles’s selling 22 pairs of shoes

to James Brown

Chance’s about the Louisianan tradition

of dancing in a bucket with a mop

at his younger brother’s wedding

and the best – the cooked turkey

delivered by Uber because a

guest/chef came down with Covid

while the pungency of the bird

still lurks in the awakened air

I get up throw on my slippers

and scuff to the kitchen

notice the oven light is on

and peer inside

and to think

those yams might have been

the hit of the party
