we are fawn and cougar

ant and elephant

slimy snake and white dove

 

we kiss and kill

crawl and fly

roar and whisper

 

if you ask if the animal

in man is good or evil

your question comes from

that other part of man

 

where love has forever tried

to fit those smooth and jagged

pieces together

 

made more difficult

by the blood-stained hands

and eyes blinded by tears
