there are dogs

renting a house by the beach

 

that smell salt

as they walk the pier

 

colors of ocean and sky

fill their eyes

 

they nose the fish buckets

watch the silver flashes

 

fishermen smell fishy too

fishy and sweaty as the sun sets

 

on the beach they run far and fast

with an eye on the master

 

what do dogs worry about?

 

only the dark spot

that stands in the shallows

 

holding two leashes

hanging free
