suddenly

 

I was no longer the burger flipper

but the meat itself

sizzling above the coals

 

empathy is a whole other

level of heat that burns

 

I can only imagine those

that stay on the grill too long

 

the shriveling

the charring

 

the waiting to see

how much is salvageable
