we pause and turn our heads
as much as dogs do
our eyes and ears
scan like there’s
they could just as well
walk us, leashed
and leading them
along the path
though their noses
would hold up the parade
our tongues would hang out
and we’d whine to go home
--- --- ---
five weeds found friendship
near a sprinkler head
truly an odd group
of tall and spindly
short and dumpy
one prickly, one feathery
another sprawled on the ground,
hanging out like
bored teenagers at a 7-11
somebody must have
insisted they leave
they never bothered me
I miss them
