why is a babbling brook enjoyable

while a person’s mouth isn’t

or a twinkling star so precious on a clear night

but not someone flicking the living-room lights

or a howling wolf under a full moon

and merely tolerant of people

it makes me think  once again

enough wildness to be endearing

yet trainable

so when barking annoyingly it will

stop with just a look or sharp word

and still remain

beautifully unscathed
