because your world often shifts

in awful ways you can’t predict -

separation loss of fortune or death

tears are used to soothe the shock

or sadness and one of the first ways

to begin adjusting to a new reality

of course we can cry while laughing

which doesn’t seem logical

why needed salty fluid with anti-

bacterial properties and electrolytes

is wasted on a joke is a mystery

but boy - it sure feels like being

a kid sitting with a friend

on a summer afternoon

and licking a fast-dripping

ice cream cone
