one thing an old man

and an old dog share

they observe each other’s aging -

the shorter walks

slower steps

longer naps

increased cushion time

on the sofa

we don’t know if a dog looks back

through the fog to puppyhood,

recalling moments of running,

playing , happy times or times

when it was lonely or hungry or sad

would I rather be an old man, able

to look back at what I once was,

or an old dog, just living out its life?

whichever one surrenders it all

when the time comes
