Dogs still Howl May 28, 2020

far from the wolfing pack

and piney trails of long ago

where midnights never spared

the choir of off-key relatives

are the clear nights of today

where each creature in our species

has an aching song their urge melody

a cry of longing that traffics the skies

and like the wild dogs of old

still craves to hear what’s sounding

over the next ridge
