Every New Poem likes to Party - Oct. 1, 2023

Gary Hunter

first words feel lonely

on a page all by themselves

if a poet is seriously sympathetic

he’ll send out invitations

to every expression he knows

and invite them to a party

that’s starting right now

a spontaneous rave

that begins with a

meet and greet

then maybe some line dancing

or a more formal ballroom-like thing

with changing partners

perhaps musical chairs hide and seek

or even pin the tail on the lyric

where the fun goes from there

late into morning evening

or whatever time

is nobody’s business

but when it’s finally over

those that are left

will stagger out happy

tell you all about it
