after a day of serving life
and seeing death
whether in blood or tears
anger or fear
screams or despair
I congratulate every face
of every police officer
who releases some
of their own humanity
back into the world
Isn’t that the best way to honor
one of the most honorable jobs?
to feel what it’s like
to wear someone else’s shoes
