my grandma used to like

to drive and meet sister Marge

at 8am for coffee and a bite

once a week on Wednesday


on some days she’d be ahead

of schedule and slow down

in her world a proper woman

never sits alone


motorists would honk

hands up in outrage

with every kind of gesture


she smiles at them all

as they roar past


too deaf to know the difference

too blind to admit it


and loving the clear road ahead
