she oozes 6th grade teacher

bespectacled patient helmet-haired

a balanced thoughtful mind

wise from all its years

as loving as any mother you’d wish for

trustworthy as your own hand

I had no idea she’d been a man

this president of our HOA

but it didn’t matter to me

what she was then

we bump shoulders now

when we laugh

I lean in to her gentleness

the caress of friendship

and what a reunion

that must have been

that thing separated at birth

in a wrong doorstep delivery

finally re-delivered home

and in putting together

the missing pieces of herself

how wonderful she kept

the sweetest part

of her soul
