Meerkat - March 20, 2026

is it three . . . or four wars now and nukes

being dusted, AI getting too smart too fast,

blizzards, heat waves, droughts, floods

starvation, that traveling horror show,

ethnic cleansing, religious rinsing, mass

shootings, kidnappings, bombings

and a deadly virus called vitriol,

whose infection has spread from

neighborhoods to every corner of the world

if only the ostrich myth were true, I’d

bury my head in the sand too, even

knowing it would change nothing

at least a mongoose lives in a burrow

as do snakes, prairie dogs, chipmunks

and ground hogs

if I were a meerkat, I’d only emerge from

the den to forage at sunrise and on quiet

full moon nights I’d stand and look at the

stars and wish for a world where grubs

were sweet and the sky would never fall
