My Other Heart - March 5, 2024

Gracie exits through a back door

while I wait in the vet’s exam room

on a 2-person bench against one of four

white walls sitting on glaciered tiles

a frozen room to play catch

with your crazy

and I    not the patient

impatient for the doctor’s return

as if Gracie is an appendage

a second heart of mine

being checked for normal thumps

the base drum of the drumline in my band

Doc has good news

it’s a nice rhythm

Gracie’s fine   and I’ll live

a hung picture of a black cat

glares at us as we leave

yeah, you wish   I say

as we high step it

out of there
