New Friend - Dec. 17, 1015

everyone has a circle of fire

around a central fire,

spears in pits, barbed wire

protection from the world

if one advances with an easy walk,

hands out and a twinkle in their eye

we may open the first gate

they may bear a gift of pleasantry

wrapped in a smile

but it’s the eyes we’ll unwrap

study in glances and stolen looks,

watch how they get along with

the flicker in our eyes

if they like what they see

one may offer a seat

while the other pours

the drink of a story

when the smoke of laughter

fills the air, both should recognize

quite easily

the fire of a new friend
