every day we cross a river

 

on a good day we reach the

other side before the sun sets

 

on a tough day we may be stuck

in the water when night falls

 

and if we beg just right

the moon might reach out

and help us to the other side

 

but to keep her long-armed

rescue a secret, she’d probably

make us make up a story

 

how in the wet darkness

of converging shadows

we outswam them all
