summertime in our town

is thunderstorm theatre

rain plays every couple weeks

which always start with

bullies of clouds that gather

high around a “mountain”

as someone offstage wobbles

an aluminum sheet for thunder

another flips the lightening switch

off and on and from the dark

ceiling above the audience

drops of water are released

for the effect of sprinkles

and we watch and wait

and wait watch and wait

some more

but these actors are just kids

who at most performances

seem like they don’t want to be there

some will wait for a friend

before they quit and walk away

and we’ll watch them leave

till they split off

and go

their separate ways home
