I get why many think the desert

is a bleak  barren deathscape 

 

lizards  snakes  scorpions

cactus  vultures  black widows

and sand in endless dunes

like waves in an ocean of it

 

but add water and watch

dragonflies skim deep pools

butterflies circle flowers

and hummingbirds crisscross

a lush nest of green trees

under the brightest blue sky

 

and of course

the biggest surprise

 

miraculous

glorious

shade
