The Poet Twists an Ankle

is there no other way to describe painexcept with the word  pain?

time for the poet to get to work

I could say it’s like a giant swinging me around by the foot

or my ankle’s been fanged and squeezed by a pissed-off python

what about putting together some hyphenated stuff to sling on the paper

It's God-damned tongue-biting teeth-grinding groan-swallowing agony

but none of those hit the mark

they only describe types of pain

I guess there’s just pain

and that conclusion doesn’t make

my ankle or this writing feel any better

ice seems to help a little

and shifts my focus to a more

practical pursuit

find someone to get me

a cold beer to help forget

I ever started this poem
