hope that snapped off in a storm

regrets dropped and stepped on

failures too heavy to hold on

the sticks and twigs

that were once a branch

broke off and fell

then shattered some more


we are the tree

that can’t hold on

to all parts of itself

too much shade

and suckers might sprout

a tangled mess

clawing for the light


it’s the story of pruning

of cutting off

letting go


but always

from the severed edge

new growth
