I’m on the elliptical
trying to determine
what shadow puppet
the clouds are making
on the mountain this morning
when two black kids cut off
my vision pushing a cart
with sleeping bags bottles
boxes and clothes that
nearly sweep the sidewalk
as they pass I’m curious
did they ever play with light
spread their fingers in the sun
and giggle at what they saw
or imagine how their shadows
would someday look
moving through this
big bright world?
