To Sing and Never Stop - May 17, 2023

Gary Hunter

what makes a fluted throat

while so many others

are raspy and fog-horned?

how do you make it vibrate

to play like a clarinet

or tremble to make it oboe

or squeeze to sound violin?

was it a bird’s gift

that spurned man’s mouth

to make music?

I wouldn’t have minded

being a bird

if flying wasn’t always to get somewhere fast

being alone wasn’t constant loneliness

and all singing done only to find a mate

to love life with my voice

in the early morning sun

and late afternoon shade

wouldn’t have been enough
