hurried move from motel to hotel

smiles left drying on the shower door

affection hiding under the sheets

surprises forgotten on the nightstand

the gift slipped inside your door

after you’ve packed and left


all things abandoned to the past

become the maid’s property

or thrown out with the trash

or flushed down the drain
