you snowbirds and
ice scrapers watch trees
turn bare in winter
our summers have the same
fierceness of that season
with the loss of leaves
there are limbs
that can’t take the sun’s oven
and die sufferingly slow
with twigs the first to show
the bones of death,
fingers still reaching,
for the life
that never came
